Training Outside Public Practice (TOPP)

If you want to be a Chartered Accountant you need to achieve a B.Com Accounting degree, followed by a qualification such as a Certificate in the Theory of Accounting (CTA) or a Post -graduate Diploma in Accounting (PGDA).

You then need to complete a three-year training contract to gain practical experience. This three-year practical is referred to as “serving articles”.

Types of Articles

There are two ways in which you can serve articles:

  • Training In Public Practice (TIPP) at an auditing firm.
  • Training Outside Public Practice (TOPP) at an Accredited Training Organisation (ATO).

An ATO is an organisation that is accredited by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), an internationally prominent association of Chartered Accountants.
