Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens is world famous for the breathtaking views, and diverse Cape flora it displays. Nestled against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, it is home to a variety of birds – including the brilliant green and red sugarbirds, owls, franklins and guinea fowl.

Getting There

Location and map

Kirstenbosch is situated 13 km from Cape Town city centre. From the city, take De Waal Drive (M3) in the direction of Muizenberg, at the first traffic light intersection turn right (southwards) into Rhodes Drive (M63) and follow the signs to Kirstenbosch.

Entrances

There are three entrances to the gardens. Gate 1 is in close proximity to the Visitors Centre, Conservatory and Restaurant, whilst Gate 2 is further on, close to the Garden Centre and Tea Room. Gate 3, also known as Rycroft Gate or Top Gate, is situated on the corner of M63 and Klaassens Road.

Parking

The main parking is located at Gate 1, with overflow parking provided at Gate 2.

Facilities

Opening hours

  • The garden itself is open 365 days a year, from 08h00 to 19h00 (September to March) and 08h00 to 18h00
    (Apr – Aug).
  • For the Summer Sunset Concerts, the concert venue will open at 15:30 and shut at 20:00.
  • Garden visitors who arrive early on Sundays and wish to attend the concert later in the day should purchase a concert ticket that will include the garden entry fee.
    Please retain your concert ticket to gain entry to the concert area.

Spotlight on Biodiversity

Don't miss the exhibits on a diverse range of biodiversity conservation topics, from butterflies to climate change, at the top of the concert lawn.

Children

For your convenience, a Kids’ Zone, situated at the top of the concert lawn, will provide supervised activities for your children during the concerts.  Bear in mind this is not a child-minding service.

Litter

Please remember to take your litter home with you, as the concert area is bin-free.

Toilets

Concert venue toilets are situated at the entrance to the concert venue.

Available at the venue

Refreshments will be on sale at all the concerts.

A selection of the winning wines from the 2008 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show will be on sale at the Silvertree Restaurant.

The Trophy Wine Show, now in its 7th year, is recognised as the country’s most credible and prestigious wine competition. Visit The Trophy Wine Show for more information and to view the 2008 winners.

Disabled facilities

Kirstenbosch is wheel-chair friendly, and well signposted for physically disabled visitors. Should you require a wheel-chair during your visit, please contact the general information office, (021) 799 8783, in advance to book one.

Parking

Parking is available for the physically disabled. Enter at Top Gate, otherwise known as Rycroft Gate or Gate 3, and proceed to the workshop area off Camphor Avenue for parking.

Toilets

Concert venue toilets for the physically disabled are clearly marked, and are situated close to the concert venue.

Please take note

  • Do not smoke in the audience or sit on deckchairs that obstruct the view of the stage for others.
  • Keep children out of the flower beds and off the stage.
  • No dogs or ball games are allowed in the garden.
  • Do respect the peace and cleanliness of adjacent residential areas when leaving.
