The Dreamfields Project is committed to finding low-cost low-maintenance solutions to field building, especially in areas where water is a scarce and unaffordable resource. A great example of this is the two soccer fields in Tshisahulu in Venda, made possible by the the remarkable contribution of businessman Vhonani Mufamadi, who grew up in this village. Visit the Dreamfields project to see what's been achieved so far.
Since then ten more pitches have been built, thanks in large part to a R6-million contribution from the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA). With their support two fields have been built in Elliotdale, Eastern Cape, and two in the Mpumalanga village of Driekoppies.
The other fields include:
- A grass field in Richards Bay, sponsored by BHP Billiton;
- Two soil-stabilised fields in Gopane and two in the Bushbuckridge area – one at Hluvukani and one in Acornhoek – funded by the Old Mutual Foundation, the Multi-Agency Grants Initiative and National Treasury;
- A soil-stabilised field at the Soul City informal settlement near Krugersdorp, funded by Germany and Bayern Munich star Philipp Lahm.
