ILima Trust
The Ilima initiative seeks to retain the skills of retiring Old Mutual executives as consultants within the Trust to assist with:
- The training of public sector workers for the purpose of capacity building in those spheres of government.
- Community development for poor and needy individuals, and anti-poverty initiatives, including the provision of training, support or assistance to community-based projects involved in self- help, empowerment, capacity building and skills development.
- Providing training, support and assistance to emerging micro enterprises to improve capacity for starting and managing businesses.
- Building capacity by way of developing the knowledge and skills base of leaders in other entities, including small and medium-sized enterprises, as a secondary objective.
Project Consolidate, a government initiative, will be the first partnership wherein these skills will be utilised. The aim is to assist in developing the capabilities of these 139 municipalities, across South Africa, to serve their communities on a sustainable basis.
We believe that communities, backed up by solid service delivery from local municipalities, form the corner stone to the achievement of South Africa’s growth and development objectives.
The Old Mutual Group, together with its black economic empowerment partner, WIPHOLD and the Department of Provincial and Local Government (DPLG), have been cooperating on Project Consolidate and work has already started in various municipalities.
A sum of R50 million has been set aside to fund the Ilima Trust over four years. The Trust can charge fees, but these fees will have a bias towards recovering costs incurred.
