Africa Infrastructure Investment Fund
Africa Infrastructure Investment Fund (AIIF) was established in 2004 with total investor commitments of over R1.3 billion, as a successor fund to SAIF. Focused specifically on assets in Africa, with a bias towards South African investments, the fund primarily invests in transport assets in South Africa and Nigeria, but also has stakes in telecommunications and power assets.
The fund is closed to new investors and was fully committed in January 2009 with R1.3 billion in assets under management. Its portfolio consists of 30-year concession contracts including the N3 Toll Concession (Pty) Ltd, Trans African Concessions (Pty) Ltd, and Lekki Concession Company Ltd.
Other investments comprise: telecommunications infrastructure service provider Neotel; alternative power suppliers; Kelvin Power, the privately-owned coal-fired power plant in Johannesburg; and Umoya Energy, the developer of a 100MW wind farm in the Western Cape.
