Current Responsibility
James is responsible for international private equity and Africa investments, a division of the Alternative Investments boutique. He heads a team of three.
His key responsibilities include fund structuring, investment mandate strategy, asset allocation, and stock selection for a number of life and third party pension fund portfolios. James also sources and executes direct private equity assets. Investment activities cover the full spectrum of listed stocks and private equity, direct lending and interest bearing instruments, property and foreign currency denominated portfolios.
James manages a sub-Sahara portfolio of listed equities for Old Mutual South Africa (OMSA) and has executive responsibility for Old Mutual Malawi’s investment and asset management operations, managing life and third party pension funds. He holds directorships of MSE listed Press Corporation, National Bank of Malawi, Malawi Property Investment Company and Telecom Networks Malawi as well as unlisted companies Malawi Telecom, First Discount House Financial Hlds, Capital Developments and New Capital Properties. James is also a member of a number of audit committees.
James heads a global private equity fund of funds focused on the US, Europe and emerging markets. He also manages a number of venture capital private equity interest focused on the UK, Israel and East US.
He is a member of various offshore private equity funds’ Advisory Boards and a director of Dublin listed Omigsa Alternative Assets Plc. He has over 30 years of investment experience and as at June 2010, the total assets managed by James amounted to approximately R6-billion (US$ 0.7 billion).
Previous Experience
Following a spell as a researcher at the Unit for Futures Research, (Stellenbosch University), James started his investments career in 1978 as an Investment Analyst (Industrials) at Old Mutual SA. In 1983, he was appointed Senior Investment Analyst, responsible for the valuation of quoted and unquoted equities, the co-ordination of equity research, broker liaison and broker research valuation. In 1985 he was promoted to Portfolio Manager. In addition to portfolio management, he shared executive responsibility for the establishment - and acquisition/sale - of a number of asset management companies in Africa.
James’ previous board positions include: Old Mutual Kenya, OMAM Zimbabwe, OMAM Namibia, OMAM Botswana and OM Properties Namibia.
