  • Paul Boynton

    Paul Boynton

    Head: OMIGSA Alternative Investments Boutique

    Paul’s entire career has been involved in investment and capital markets. He completed an Honours degree at the University of Cape Town in Operations Research, including coursework on Econometrics and Modern Portfolio Theory. He also holds an MBA from UCT.

    His previous work experience includes serving articles with Deloittes in Johannesburg where he qualified as a chartered accountant. He then spent seven years as an investment banker at Investec.

    Paul moved to Cape Town and joined Old Mutual in 1995. His prior experience at Old Mutual includes five years as the portfolio manager of the Old Mutual Life Funds (at the time a $50bn portfolio and the largest balanced mandate in the country) and three years as Head of Investment Views, formulating the investment house view and model portfolio for Old Mutual Asset Managers. Over these periods, the Life Funds and fully discretionary balanced funds, respectively, delivered top quartile performance.

    Paul was appointed Head of the Alternative Investments Boutique in 2004, which is responsible for the group’s investments in infrastructure, private equity, social impact investment and mezzanine debt. He chairs the Alternative Assets Investment Committee and has served on the boards of, inter alia, African Infrastructure Investment Managers, Assore, CIT, J&J, Life Healthcare, Metcash, Mezzanine Partners, Old Mutual Investment Group, Pepkor, Tourvest, Worldwide African Investment Holdings.

    He has also chaired Green Hands, the OMIGSA Social Development Forum, for 10 years./p>

    Chief Operating Officer

    Current Responsibility

    Karin joined the Alternative Investments boutique in May 2010 as Chief Operating Officer. She is responsible for maintaining and improving the boutique’s operating capabilities, ensuring that an adequate control and risk function is in place and project managing major business initiatives such as product development and business planning.

    Her background enables her to bring her extensive knowledge of asset management operations, IT environments and general best practice solution management to the fore.

    Previous Experience

    Prior to joining OMIGSA, she was employed as institutional Chief Operating Officer at STANLIB Asset Management.

    Karin has 11 years of relevant operational, process and project management experience within the financial services industry.

    Current Responsibility

    Wayne joined the Alternative Investments boutique in February 2005.

    Previous Experience

    Wayne completed his articles with Deloitte & Touche, Cape Town where he was mainly involved in the audit and servicing of clients in the financial services industry. He joined Old Mutual as manager of the Investments Accounting department in October 1993 and subsequently joined OMIGSA as accounting manager in June 1997. As Financial Manager, Wayne was responsible for the provision of managerial and technical services to OMIGSA (and clients where applicable) in the spheres of accounting, taxation, valuation of investment assets and financial and statutory reporting.

    Mohsin Cajee

    Analyst

    Current Responsibility

    Mohsin joined the Alternative Investments boutique in March 2006 and was Deputy to the CFO. Currently, as a Analyst in the Private Equity team, Mohsin is responsible for company and industry research, financial analysis, cash flow modelling, valuations, deal structuring and preparing investment reports.

    Previous Experience

    As Deputy to the CFO, his duties included investment, finance and operations support to the Private Equity, Infrastructure, FSC and Mezzanine Debt funding areas. Prior to this he worked as a Business Analyst responsible for the successful development and certification of OMIGSA’s Capital Gains Tax software system.

  • Quinton Dicks

    Quinton Dicks

    Portfolio Manager

    Current Responsibility

    Quinton joined the Private Equity team in March 2006. His primary responsibilities include managing the legal requirements of the division, advising on the negotiations and structuring of all transactions entered into by private equity, managing existing investments, sourcing new investment opportunities, assessing prospective investments, preparing investment reports, structuring investments, negotiating the transactions, carrying out due diligences and managing the investment once concluded.

    Previous Experience

    Quinton is a non-practising attorney and joined the advisory business of Capital Partners (later Brait SA) in 1998 after being with Bell Dewar and Hall and the Department of Justice. He has extensive merger and acquisition experience across a wide range of industries and has also been involved in the structuring and drafting of documentation required for both private equity and hedge funds.

    He has focused on transaction support for private equity, mergers and acquisitions and the corporate finance divisions and was a previously a director and member of Brait Advisors management committee. Quinton joined Metier Investment & Advisors (Pty) Ltd in August 2004 to deepen its deal evaluation and implementation capacity as both investor and adviser.

    Kevin French

    Current Responsibility

    Kevin joined the Private Equity team in 2008. He is responsible for client reporting and business development.

    Previous Experience

    Prior to joining the Private Equity team, Kevin headed up the Asset Manager research team at SYm|mETRY Multi-manager for eight years, responsible for asset manager evaluations and selection on their R38bn portfolio.

    Before joining SYm|mETRY Kevin spent two years as the Senior Fund Manager at Old Mutual Employee Benefits. Here, he was responsible for the investment reporting to Old Mutual’s Smoothed Bonus clients.

    From 1993 to 1997 Kevin worked at Engen as an Investment Analyst for the retirement fund’s R1-billion portfolio evaluating asset managers and direct property investments.

  • Mark Gevers

    Mark Gevers

    Head: Private Equity

    Current Responsibility

    Mark joined OMIGSA in 2001, and was appointed to Head of Private Equity in 2004. His private equity initiatives encompass the investing, managing and ultimately realising unlisted and mezzanine debt investments made over a medium-term horizon of three to six years, by realising such investments, with the objective of maximising capital appreciation.

    He has joint responsibilities for overseeing OMIGSA's Mezzanine Debt activities as well as the management of the Old Mutual Multi-Manager Private Equity Retail Fund.

    He currently sits on the boards of Brait South Africa, Savcio and Pepkor and on both the board and investment committee of Mezzanine Partners, the Advisory Board of Brait Fund IV and the J&J Private Equity Fund Investment Committee.

    Previous Experience

    Mark has worked in the private equity and corporate finance industry for the past 12 years, focused on private equity, after having first worked for Firstcorp Capital Investors (now Ethos) and subsequently Brait Capital Partners before joining OMIGSA Private Equity.

    Current Responsibility

    Lance is responsible for the review, negotiation, funding, structuring, legal, due diligence, and strategic aspects of investments in companies which meet our mandate. Additionally, he is responsible for the monitoring and realisation of such investments, and the valuation thereof until realisation.

    Previous Experience

    Prior to joining OMIGSA, Lance was an executive in corporate finance at Pamodzi Investment Holdings since April 2003. Some of his responsibilities included due diligence investigations, desktop review, initial dealflow screening, annual AFS portfolio valuation, financial modelling, tax and transactional structuring, private equity fund raising.

    Lance worked at Colonial First State Private Equity (Australia) as an Investment Analyst. His responsibilities were portfolio reviews and reporting, company analysis, industry research, due diligence and prospective investments.

    Current Responsibility

    Farhad joined the Private Equity team in February 2005. Farhad is currently responsible for evaluating, research and analysis as well as the structuring of both listed and unlisted investments within the private equity field.

    Previous Experience

    Prior to joining OMIGSA, Farhad worked in the Johannesburg offices of global consulting group Stern Stewart & Co, where he held the position of Senior Analyst. Farhad was employed by Stern Stewart & Co for a term of three years.

    Current Responsibility

    Chumani joined the Private Equity team in February 2008 as an Analyst, having spent a year with the team as a trainee analyst as part of the Old Mutual TOPP programme. As a member of the Private Equity team, he is responsible for company and industry research, financial analysis, cash flow modelling, valuations, deal structuring and preparing investment reports. Chumani currently serves on the boards of Idwala and Worldwide as an alternate director, whilst he is an observer at the board of SAVCIO and also a member of the Audit Committee.

    Previous Experience

    Prior to joining OMIGSA, he was a trainee accountant in the Old Mutual TOPP programme for three years. Chumani has degrees in accounting, finance and auditing, is a chartered accountant and a CFA charterholder.

    Current Responsibility

    Ismail joined OMIGSA in August 2002. As Portfolio Manager in the Alternative Investments boutique, Ismail’s main responsibilities include managing some of the investments in the private equity portfolio as well as the R200-million Transnet Retirement Development Fund, assessing new investment opportunities, preparing investment reports, company valuations, deal structuring and performing due diligences on prospective investments.

    Previous Experience

    Ismail joined the Industrial Development Corporation SA Ltd (IDC) in 1996 as a Business Analyst and later as Project Manager and was responsible for managing the IDC’s equity investments in the agriculture, food and beverage sectors. He then joined Prodigy Asset Management in 2000 (18 months) where he was responsible for managing its Private Equity Portfolio.

    Before joining OMIGSA, Jacci worked with Old Mutual’s Corporate Finance division for five years. Prior to this, he was with Anglo American’s Corporate Finance division after serving articles with PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

    Current Responsibility

    Garth joined the Private Equity team in February 2003.

    Garth’s main responsibilities include sourcing new investment opportunities, assessing prospective investments, structuring investments, negotiating the transactions and managing the investment once concluded. He is also the Director of Life Healthcare and Metcash Trading Africa.

    Previous Experience

    Garth served articles with Deloitte and Touche. He then worked and travelled overseas before returning to South Africa to join SARS as part of a change management team. Thereafter, he worked as a Commercial Manager for Group Five Properties before joining African Harvest Finance in corporate finance in 1997 and subsequently moving into African Harvest Capital’s private equity team in 1999.

  • Leon Liebenberg

    Leon Liebenberg

    Investment Professional: International Private Equity

    Current Responsibility

    Leon joined the Alternative Investments boutique in 2007, as a member of the International Private Equity team, where he has been instrumental in implementing the organisation of the OMIGSA International Private Equity Fund of Funds (“the fund”).

    He forms part of the advisory team that makes investment recommendations to the fund, and is involved in the monitoring of the fund’s investments. Leon also advises the fund in respect of its financial operations and reporting.

    Previous Experience

    Leon has 26 years of work experience, which started with completing his articles at Deloitte & Touche in Johannesburg. Thereafter, he worked in the Corporate Finance division of UAL Merchant Bank for nine years, advancing to General Manager. During this time, he advised listed companies regarding mergers, acquisitions, restructurings and fundraising.

    He was involved in direct private equity investing from 1996 to 2006 with entities such as New Africa Advisors, Gensec Bank and Absa Capital. There he gained valuable experience in making private equity investments, post-investment management of private equity investments, structuring private equity funds, restructuring of investments and exiting from investments. During this time he served on the boards of directors of a number of companies.

    James Regout

    Head: International Private Equity

    Current Responsibility

    James is responsible for international private equity and Africa investments, a division of the Alternative Investments boutique. He heads a team of three.

    His key responsibilities include fund structuring, investment mandate strategy, asset allocation, and stock selection for a number of life and third party pension fund portfolios. James also sources and executes direct private equity assets. Investment activities cover the full spectrum of listed stocks and private equity, direct lending and interest bearing instruments, property and foreign currency denominated portfolios.

    James manages a sub-Sahara portfolio of listed equities for Old Mutual South Africa (OMSA) and has executive responsibility for Old Mutual Malawi’s investment and asset management operations, managing life and third party pension funds. He holds directorships of MSE listed Press Corporation, National Bank of Malawi, Malawi Property Investment Company and Telecom Networks Malawi as well as unlisted companies Malawi Telecom, First Discount House Financial Hlds, Capital Developments and New Capital Properties. James is also a member of a number of audit committees.

    James heads a global private equity fund of funds focused on the US, Europe and emerging markets. He also manages a number of venture capital private equity interest focused on the UK, Israel and East US.

    He is a member of various offshore private equity funds’ Advisory Boards and a director of Dublin listed Omigsa Alternative Assets Plc. He has over 30 years of investment experience and as at June 2010, the total assets managed by James amounted to approximately R6-billion (US$ 0.7 billion).

    Previous Experience

    Following a spell as a researcher at the Unit for Futures Research, (Stellenbosch University), James started his investments career in 1978 as an Investment Analyst (Industrials) at Old Mutual SA. In 1983, he was appointed Senior Investment Analyst, responsible for the valuation of quoted and unquoted equities, the co-ordination of equity research, broker liaison and broker research valuation. In 1985 he was promoted to Portfolio Manager. In addition to portfolio management, he shared executive responsibility for the establishment - and acquisition/sale - of a number of asset management companies in Africa.

    James’ previous board positions include: Old Mutual Kenya, OMAM Zimbabwe, OMAM Namibia, OMAM Botswana and OM Properties Namibia.

    Greg has four years of work experience in various roles involving the analysis and viability of property investments.

    Leon joined the Development Impact Team from OMIGSA's Central Credit Team, where he was a Credit Analyst. His responsibilities include investigating and concluding new transactions, managing existing transactions, and assuming overall responsibility for administration and governance functions within the team.

    Leon’s diverse background enables him to bring his credit and financial management skills to the fore.

    Previous Experience

    Prior to joining OMIGSA, he was a credit analyst at CA-Ratings and Moody's for seven years.

    In addition, Leon has fifteen years of work experience as Financial Manager and Financial Director in medium-size private companies.

    Current Responsibility

    As Portfolio Manager, Sean has overall responsibility for the origination, acquisition and management of assets for the IDEAS Managed Fund.

    Previous Experience

    Sean transferred to OMIGSA Infrastructure and Developmental Assets team in January 2006 from Old Mutual Properties where he worked in property project finance for two years.

    Prior to joining the Old Mutual group, Sean worked for seven years at the listed property financial services and investment firm, Lyons.

    Christine Glover

    Head: Development Impact Funds

    Current Responsibility

    Christine joined OMIGSA in July 2006 as a consultant helping OMIGSA to identify appropriate Financial Sector Charter Assets. Christine then joined OMIGSA permanently in October 2007. As a member of the Alternative Investments boutique, she is responsible for originating and managing FSC compliant assets.

    Previous Experience

    Prior to joining OMIGSA, she was a consultant for five years and Managing Director of CashBank and its predecessor, The Group Credit Company, for 13 years. Christine was involved primarily in squatter upgrading strategies with the Urban Foundation for a further five years. Christine has 23 years of work experience in low-income housing.

    Current Responsibility

    Collene joined OMIGSA in August 2008 and was responsible for investment and operations support to the private equity, infrastructure and mezzanine debt funding areas. As of January 2010 she joined the Financial Sector Charter (FSC) Team within OMIGSA Alternative Investments and is currently responsible for investment and operations support function within the team.

    Previous Experience

    Prior to OMIGSA, Collene was the Financial Manager of Sanlam Private Equity, having joined in 2005. Here she was responsible for the full financial, administrative and operational activities of the business.

    Collene began her professional career after completing her articles with Grant Thornton International, later joining Sanlam Employee Benefits in 2000 as an accountant. She also worked at Tellumat Manufacturing in 2002, as a Financial Accountant.

    Palesa joined OMIGSA in April 2010 as an Investment Analyst. She is responsible for: analysis , provision of relevant information in the housing and associated space, originating projects, conducting due diligence, full financial analysis, structuring and risk assessment of projects as well as a risk assessment, writing up the investment proposals, ongoing monitoring and management of projects, contributing to direction and management of fund and all performance reporting with specific focus on the Housing Impact Fund.

    Palesa’s banking background enables her to bring her numerical and analytical thinking skills to the fore.

    Prior to joining OMIGSA she was an Analyst at First Rand Bank Ltd for a year, and had previously completed a graduate programme at Nedbank Capital.

    Rory Mackey

    Head: International Airports Fund

    Current Responsibility

    Rory joined the Alternative Investments boutique in May 2008 to manage airport investments in India and Turkey, and to establish a portfolio of international airport assets.

    He utilises his expertise in the management of investments in unique assets within a specialised sector.

    Previous Experience

    Prior to joining OMIGSA, Rory was Group Executive: Commercial at the Airports Company of South Africa. He was responsible for all the group’s activities which realised revenue from sources other than South African regulated aeronautical tariffs including retail, property, advertising and international acquisitions and investments.

    Rory led the GVK-SA consortium's successful bid for Mumbai International Airport and currently manages the South African Consortium’s investment in Mumbai International Airport Private Limited on whose board he also serves.

    His 25-years' experience in the aviation industry includes being General Manager of Africa’s largest airport, OR Tambo International, from 1996 to 2001. He also has experience in consultancy, construction, retail and property development.

    Lukholo joined OMIGSA in November 2010. As a member of the FSC team, he is responsible for assisting with due diligence undertaken by asset managers, prepare financial models, monitor the performance of certain assets and assist in the preparation of six-monthly and annual valuations.

    Lukholo’s background enables him to bring his strong financial and team working skills to the fore.

    Prior to joining OMIGSA he was part of the Graduate Acceleration Program at Old Mutual Investment Group Property Investments (OMIGPI) for 21 months.

    Current Responsibility

    Junaid joined OMIGSA in March 2010. As a member of the Development Impact Asset team, he is responsible for research and analysis, assisting in the origination of projects, due diligence of projects, financial structuring and modelling, asset valuation, development of term sheets, writing investment proposals and social impact analysis. He is currently focused on the establishment of the Schools Fund.

    Junaid’s background enables him to bring his research and financial skills to the fore. He has a keen interest in developing triple bottom line investment solutions.

    Prior to joining OMIGSA, Junaid spent two years in Dubai working for the Dubai Real Estate Institute offering executive education courses for managers working in the Middle East Real Estate industry.

    Kingdom joined the IDEAS Fund in February 2010 as an Asset Manager. He is responsible for investments in telecoms, energy and transport.

    Previous Experience

    Prior to joining Old Mutual, Kingdom served four years with Vodacom and at the time of his departure he was Head of Group Corporate Finance.

    Kingdom started his career with JPMorgan Corporate Finance where he covered telecoms and financial institutions and general industries investment banking.

    Kathiem joined the Development Impact Funds team in June 2011 as an Investment Analyst. As a member of the team, he is responsible for analysis of potential projects, as well as management of existing assets in the Development Impact Fund Portfolio.

    Previous Experience

    Prior to joining Old Mutual Investment Group South Africa (OMIGSA), he was a manager at KPMG in their corporate finance division for two years, before starting with OMIGSA Finance in January 2010.

    Kathiem has 13 years of work experience, working in the back office of various asset management companies before completing articles with KPMG and qualifying as a chartered accountant.

    Tom Plaistowe

    Current Responsibility

    Tom is currently responsible for the appraisal, analysis, and portfolio management of infrastructure and development assets for the Old Mutual Group.

    He is Chairman of the Africa Infrastructure Investment Fund Managers, a company that is jointly owned by OMIGSA and Macquarie Bank and which manages the South African Infrastructure Fund, the Africa Infrastructure Investment Fund and jointly with Kagiso, the Kagiso Infrastructure Empowerment Fund. He is a Director of Setsing Financial Services and the Community Growth Management Company both asset management companies.

    He is Chairman of the N3 Toll Concession Company and a Director of Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concession Company, Railway Systems of Zambia, New Limpopo Bridge and Rainprop.

    Previous Experience

    Tom has six-years' experience as a consulting civil and structural engineer and 21-years' investment experience with the Old Mutual Group – including eight years investment experience in sub-Saharan African countries including Kenya, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana.

    Portfolio Manager: Schools and Education Funds

    Current Responsibility

    Lala joined OMIGSA in June 2010. As a member of the Development Impact Funds team, she is responsible for the Schools and Education Investment Fund and School and Education Grant Fund.

    Previous Experience

    Lala has over 20 years of experience in South Africa and other African countries on management and implementation of development programmes in various sectors. She is a strategic problem solver and driver of the design and implementation of programmes that contribute to growth and development.

    Her first job was as an English second language teacher in a township school in the 1980s. In the mid-1980s and early 1990s she worked in the NGO sector against forced removals and on land and housing issues. In 1995, she joined the Mandela government as a Senior Manager for the National Department of Land Affairs. Thereafter, she worked as a sustainable development consultant.

    Lungelwa is an Assistant Portfolio Manager in the infrastructure and development assets team. She is currently involved in the management of the IDEAS Fund. In this role, she analyses and assesses potential investment projects for the funds.

    Previous Experience

    Prior to joining OMIGSA, Lungelwa was employed as a trainee by an investment management company in its Specialised Finance division. Lungelwa’s was involved in research and analysis for various investments. Prior to that, Lungelwa worked for asset management companies as a client liaison officer where she was responsible for investment reports for institutional clients.

  • Jurie Swart

    Jurie Swart

    Head: Infrastructure and Development Impact Funds

    Current Responsibility

    Jurie was appointed as the Head of Infrastructure and Development Impact Funds in 2007. The division includes: the AIIM infrastructure asset management joint venture with Macquarie Bank, which manages the SAIF, AIIF and KEIF Funds; the IDEAS Fund; the FSC Targeted Investments Fund, and the International Infrastructure Fund.

    Since the beginning of 2001, Jurie has been involved in various roles in the Infrastructure and Development Impact Funds division of the Alternative Investments boutique. This includes the analysis, assessment and execution of infrastructure and development property projects; ongoing asset management of investments; portfolio management of the IDEAS Fund, and board representation on various investee company boards.

    Previous Experience

    Jurie joined OMIGSA as an Equity Analyst in September 1999 before joining the Infrastructure team.

    After completing an accounting conversion course at UCT, he served articles with KPMG on various audits, tax advisory work and secondment to major clients on corporate finance assignments.

    Jurie started his working career at Murray and Roberts, as a civil engineering contractor on various road, bridge and bulk concrete projects.

    Sarah Webb

    Senior Portfolio Manager

    Current Responsibility

    Sarah joined OMIGSA in 2007. She is responsible for origination, implementation, operational and investment performance of the HIFSA and FSC funds property-related investments.

    Sarah is focusing on affordable housing, but not abandoning her roots in commercial property. She also has proven experience in a diverse range of property and finance disciplines.

    Her extensive network of contacts in the property, finance, legal and businesses in general in South Africa are also key assets.

    Previous Experience

    Prior to OMIGSA, Sarah was a director of property finance at Standard Bank for 21 years until March 2007. In that time, she was involved with property valuation, property management, property asset management and structured finance on a national basis.

    Her previous work experience was with The Prudential Assurance Company working in the property investment department.

    Ilse has 16 years of work experience in the finance industry as a client care manager, business analyst and portfolio operations manager.

    Prior to joining OMIGSA, she was a Business Analyst at the Industrial Development Corporation for two years.

    Current Responsibility

    Mnombo joined the Development Impact Funds team in June 2011. As a member of the team, he is responsible for assisting in the origination of projects, due diligence of projects, financial structuring and modelling, development of term sheets and writing investment proposals.

    Previous Experience

    Prior to joining the Development Impact Fund team, he worked in various roles within the Old Mutual Group, including working as Executive Assistant to the CEO of OMIGSA, Product Management Consultant for the GREENLIGHT range of risk products in the Retail Affluence and as an actuarial student within Retail Risk Product Development.

    Mnombo has over 10 years of work experience in the financial services industry.
