The Icon brands benchmark measures loyalty, actual reported usage amongst South Africans across a number of categories and brands. Brands are considered winners should they be utilized by all South Africans, irrespective of LSM, socio-economic background, age, gender and profession.
The survey is the largest of its kind in South African with 19 sectors, hundreds of product categories and thousands of brands included in the measurement and includes all communities with more than 8,000
inhabitants, 15+ years. 15,284 consumers were surveyed representing over 25 million adult South African consumers.
Old Mutual has been named first in the Long-Term Insurance Business to Consumer category of the 2017 Sunday Times Top Brand Awards (13 years in a row); top 5 for Investment Companies Business and Medical Aid Companies Business category; top 10 Long Term Insurance Business category.
2017 brings the ninth successful year in partnership with KANTAR TNS South Africa for the Sunday Times Top Brands. The study applies the same methodology since 2009.
The approach looks at a brand’s penetration in the marketplace whilst also examining its relative strength amongst its users and its relative attraction amongst non-users – the concept of relative advantage. This was accomplished by asking three questions:
From this, an index score for each brand is generated from three variables derived from the questions above: the actual usage of a brand in a specified time period, the rating it receives from its users relative to others in the category, and the rating it receives from those non-users aware of it, also relative to competitors in the category. The non-user rating carries only half the weight of the user rating in the final algorithm.
The final index can be thought of as the brand’s standing in both the market place and in people’s heads. This is in line with the current thinking that brand equity is a function of both Power in the Mind and Power in the Market, coupled with the view that one must always take the attraction of competitors into account in any assessment of brand equity.

Old Mutual was the most trusted brand in the Life Insurance category of the 2015 Reader's Digest South Africa’s Most Trusted Brands Awards - for the third year in a row. In addition we were also highly recommended in the Investment Management category. This category was first introduced in 2014.
The Trusted Brands Survey, commissioned by Reader’s Digest, seeks to identify which brands South Africans trust the most, and to provide an objective and reliable reference for consumers throughout the country. It has a long-established reputation as the premier measure of brand preference across the world.
Respondents are invited to rate brands from 0 to 10 based on their perception of the market / competition and any relevant experiences they may have with the brands for each category.
The survey accurately measures trust level in South Africa for each industries as respondents gets a chance to voice their opinion on trust - regardless of whether their trust level is low or high for each categories.
