Vulnerable Communities

Through this portfolio, the Old Mutual Foundation seeks to alleviate the distress of the vulnerable and defenceless. We provide relief and care to those in our society who are in need of compassion, disenfranchised or have been rendered voiceless – the elderly, neglected and orphaned children, people with disabilities. If necessary, we also provide aid in cases of emergency disaster relief.

Case Studies

1. Employment Solutions for People with Disabilities

Employment Solutions was started in the 1999 to provide sheltered employment for people with disabilities. Today, it employs 135 staff, all with one form of disability or another, who’re actively engaged in the many projects run on the premises. The organisation generates sustainable income through commercial contracts requiring high-volume, labour-intensive work. As part of the Old Mutual Foundation’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities, R250 000 was funded for the purchase of a new forklift which enabled Employment Solutions to increase their production capacity and reduce donor dependency.

2. Uhambo Foundation

Shonaquip specialises in the manufacture of assistive seating and mobility devices, such as wheelchairs and buggies. Through corrective seating, a cerebral palsied child’s spinal posture can be maintained in a well-aligned position that not only lets her body to grow properly but also allows for improved functionality i.e. self-feeding, playing and gesturing for communication. The Old Mutual Foundation donated R80 000 towards the provision of buggies for vulnerable children in Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
