What is Staff Volunteerism?
The Staff Volunteerism portfolio aims to enable and support Old Mutual staff to make a difference in their communities by volunteering their time, skills or money. The portfolio includes ad-hoc volunteerism programmes; Care and Share, Habitat for Humanity and Mandela Day.For the different programmes the portfolio supports, the funding criteria may vary. However, only contract and permanent Old Mutual South Africa staff can apply for a programme of their choice. See the programme below to find out more on how you can make a difference.

Provides financial support to charity organisations where Old Mutual staff volunteer. The programme entails:
- 1x project can be supported per staff member for 1 year.
- A donation of R40 000 is donated to the charity organisation over a period of 3 years.
- Funds can be used to purchase equipment and other necessities but cannot be used for operational and admin related expenses.
Funding Criteria
The criteria for a charity organisation is that an Old Mutual staff must be a volunteer at the organisation for at least 3 months at the time of submitting their application and must continue to volunteer for 4 - 8 hours per month. Type of organisations staff can volunteer at must be registered, have an active bank account, constitution and include:
- Non-profit (NPO)
- Public benefit organisation
- Co-operative
- Religious organisations with a registered outreach/charity programme(s) which are not religiously exclusive
- School
- Sports organisation
- The volunteer work must be outside of work-related business activities

- Child welfare
- Disability
- Education including early childhood
- Environmental care
- Health and wellness
- Sport development
- Youth Development
Funding criteria
1 project can be supported per staff member/teams for 1 year. Only contract and permanent Old Mutual South Africa staff can apply. A staff member can only apply for the selected focus areas. The Old Mutual Foundation support community projects nationally between September to November each year for its staff for a maximum of R5 000 per project. Type of organisations staff can fund raise for must be registered, have an active bank account, constitution, proper governance structures in place and include:
- Non-profit (NPO)
- Public benefit organisation(PBO)
- School
- Sports organisation

This particular programme is funded by staff who make a monthly contribution and Old Mutual Finance matches all contributions rand for rand. The funds are managed by the Old Mutual Staff Volunteer Fund Trust (OMSVFT).
The programme’s processes include:
- Assessing and adjudicating funding applications
- Ensuring staff donations are disbursed appropriately
- Monitoring and evaluating the efficiency of supported programmes
- Sourcing and reviewing applications
Funding criteria
Eligible for funding are public benefit organisation (PBO’s) with a track record of delivery, can provide a sustainable benefit to its beneficiaries and represent South Africa’s demographics. Focus areas include:
- Abused & Vulnerable Children
- Animal Welfare
- Early Childhood Development
- The Elderly
- Women Empowerment
- Youth Development
