One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is “Can I get funeral cover for my parents?” This is closely followed by "Can I get funeral cover for parents who are over 65, or parents over 80 in South Africa?" In this FAQs article we look at answering these two key questions and a few other common ones we receive.
How old can parents be to qualify for funeral cover?
The age of the seniors who can be covered with a funeral plan – in this case it would be parents, mother-in-law, father-in-law and even adoptive or step parents - must be 84-years-old or younger. So the answer to the earlier question is a definite yes - you can cover your 60-year-old parents, or your 70-year-old parents-in-law or even your 80-year-old adoptive parent.
It's also important to note that there is a maximum age for the person buying the funeral policy (policyholder) – this would be you if you are taking the funeral cover out for your parents. The maximum age varies from product to product.
What is the Old Mutual funeral cover age limit?
The age limits are different and depend on the type of funeral plan you choose and who you want to cover. The age limits apply to both the person taking out/paying for the policy (policyholder) and the person who the funeral cover is for (insured person). The maximum age for the insured person (the parent) is 84.
Why is it important to buy funeral cover for your parents or even parents-in-law?
Funerals can be expensive in South Africa - giving our parents, or even our parents-in-law, a proper farewell is the least we can do. Having affordable funeral cover for your parents or parents-in-law, will help you to cover the expenses. In most cases, funeral plans pay out quite fast which makes the planning of the funeral that much easier.
What do funeral policies cover?
Depending on the amount of funeral cover you buy, the money that is paid out can be used to pay for:
- The burial including the coffin.
- Cremation
- Transportation of the deceased within South Africa
- Catering and venue hire
- Tombstone
