What is the Masisizane Fund?

Masisizane Fund is Old Mutual’s Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) initiative. It’s focused on helping more small and medium enterprises (SMMEs) access sustainable finance, through partnerships with experienced financial institutions.

At its core, the Fund is about supporting long-term, inclusive economic growth. This means deploying capital responsibly, supporting job creation, and helping businesses build stability over time.

We work with partners who share this outlook. Through strong governance, disciplined funding structures and responsible lending practices, we aim to support businesses in a way that is both commercially sound and impactful.
Benefits of partnering with us

Masisizane Fund provides wholesale funding to selected Commercial Lending Partners, who then lend to qualifying businesses.

Each partnership is structured to balance growth with responsible lending. This includes a strong focus on credit discipline, portfolio performance and risk management, while supporting sectors that play an important role in the economy.

We take the time to understand each potential partner. Structures are shaped around factors such as institutional strength, lending capability, portfolio performance and overall alignment with the Fund’s objectives.

Who can apply

We invite proposals from:

  • non-bank financial institutions
  • regulated specialist lenders and SMME finance providers

Applicants need to show:

  • a strong track record in lending
  • clear and effective credit, risk and portfolio management practices
  • appropriate regulatory registration and governance structures

What your proposal should cover

To understand how you operate, we ask for a clear view of your business and lending approach, including:

  • your organisation’s structure, ownership, regulatory status and operating model
  • the lending products you offer, including structure, pricing approach and how credit decisions are supported
  • your target market, origination channels and how you manage the full lending lifecycle
  • your risk and governance framework, including how you monitor, manage and respond to risk
  • your portfolio performance, including key credit metrics and loss experience
  • how you plan to use wholesale funding and how it will support your lending strategy
  • your reporting approach, including how performance, risk and governance are tracked and shared

Important to note

Masisizane Fund may accept or decline proposals at its discretion. Shortlisted applicants may be invited into a more detailed review process.

Submitting a proposal does not guarantee funding. Any funding decision will depend on a full credit assessment, risk considerations, and strategic alignment.

How funding is structured

Indicative terms may include:

  • medium-term facilities, typically between 36 and 60 months
  • risk-based pricing, linked to portfolio performance and structure

All terms are subject to credit approval and final structuring.
