After more than a year of Covid-19 and lockdown, South Africa is facing record unemployment numbers. As a result, more and more people have been trying to get
their careers back on track – or simply attempting to earn a living – and the online job market has boomed.
On Twitter, @TheBeginningSA, with more than
47 000 followers who are either looking for work or advertising an opportunity, keeps the #JobSeekersSA tag trending. More and more people are using LinkedIn, too, to create profiles as jobseekers by posting their CVs online and using the #OpenToWork option under their profiles to notify recruiters that they are available.
Tamara Wolpert, General Manager and Consultant at Cape Town-based Viv Gordon Placements, says that while many companies are cutting jobs and there are most certainly hiring freezes, some people are still finding a job quite quickly. ‘We work in the media industry where the need – and call for – hybrids is on the increase. They are applicants who are multiskilled and can perform several roles like social-media manager, copywriter and designer. Companies are definitely trying to fill various roles, but with one person instead of two or three.’
