UPFRONT VOICES
Contributors
Meet three of the writers featured in this issue. We turned the tables and asked them about their careers and money.
JACQUELINE FICK
Jacqueline is an advocate and cybercrime expert. On page 36, she explains the latest changes to South Africa’s Cybercrimes Act and how they could affect us.
Why the keen interest in cyber and internet security?
‘There is literally something new every day, which keeps me on my toes! We can’t defend against what we do not know, and currently everything we are and own is in some way connected
to the internet.’
Describe your attitude to money.
‘Starting my own business just before lockdown began has taught me to value money more; financial stress can be extremely tough
and it’s imperative to make good financial choices. I’ve also learnt that you must take the time
to find a good financial adviser and accountant!’
Any money resolutions for 2022?
‘To save and invest wherever I can, and to spend wisely.'
SANJANA JOSHUA
Sanjana, Old Mutual’s Group Talent and Learning Executive, shares valuable career advice on page 26.
Can you remember your first job and what it was like?
‘As a first-year student I realised I needed a job to help support my lifestyle. I became a sales assistant in the women’s clothing division at a well-known store. This gave me a deep respect and appreciation for customer relations. I also learnt the value of hard work and the importance of taking informed financial decisions.’
Which one piece of career advice do you have for everyone?
‘Be a lifelong learner. Skill needs and careers are changing at a rapid rate and jobs that are relevant now might not be in the future.’
Any career resolutions for 2022?
‘To ensure that our work makes a clear difference to society. And more personally, I’m striving for a better work-life balance.’
MONWABISI MHLOPHE
Last year, Monwabisi swapped a full- time job to go freelancing. We asked her for tips to be more eco-friendly on a budget. (Read them on page 21.)
Describe your attitude to money.
‘Initially, money used to evoke feelings of negativity and fear in me. However, over the last few years
my attitude has shifted and I now have a more positive relationship with it. This allows me to feel more empowered and capable when facing financial matters.’
You recently began freelancing. What’s it like to be your own boss? ‘Depending on the day and the deadline, being my own boss ranges from challenging and empowering to scary and fun.
I have no regrets, though – going freelance was the best decision
I could have made.’
Any money resolutions for 2022?
‘I have savings and investment goals that I have set for myself. My discipline will certainly be stretched, but I aim to maintain my resolve.’
