What is the difference between health insurance and medical aid?

Medical aid schemes provide comprehensive cover at a relatively higher monthly contribution and are governed by the Medical Schemes Act. They must adhere to regulatory requirements which include: indemnity based, not for profit, open enrolment and Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMB).

By contrast, a health insurance product offers insurance cover at a relatively lower cost for basic, day-to-day expenses such as general practitioner (GP) visits and medication. Health insurance also adheres to the Short-term Insurance Act and the Insurance Act. These regulations are: indemnity based, for profit, group, and individual-focused underwriting.

Employees can have both health insurance and medical aid products but only for day-to-day cover; they can't have both if they opt for a benefit option providing hospital emergency cover or illness (they have to choose one or the other).
