What we can learn when comparing fund size and performanceWhen it comes to the size of a fund and the performance it delivers for investors, is bigger better, or do smaller funds actually outperform larger ones? Old Mutual Corporate Consultants’ investment specialist compared a number of funds, studies around them and the outcomes to find out.ARTICLE BY OLD MUTUAL CORPORATE CONSULTANTS | DATE: 12 December 2022 | READ TIME: 6 MIN

A number of studies have been conducted in investment circles around the relationship between the size of a fund being invested into and the outcome delivered. The results and conclusions, however, have been mixed, and a focus on some results rather than others has at times created a skewed perception of the wider picture.

So what does the research show objectively when it comes to funds in South Africa, specifically around actively managed, diversified equity funds?

Old Mutual Corporate Consultants conducted a study to answer this question, looking at a number of funds, how they performed and what made them do well, or not.

The research takes into consideration local and international funds, other research and studies to see what we can learn from the size and performance of local diversified equity funds over the past decade.
