Khokha umoya with Old Mutual funeral cover

Life comes with enough worries. We are here to help you through those. With the right funeral cover in place, you can have peace of mind knowing that when the unexpected happens, your loved ones won't have to carry the financial burden alone.  Find comfort in knowing you have cover that protects the people you love.
3 reasons why funeral cover is important

1. By having funeral cover your family will have the funds on hand to cover the expenses associated with a funeral

2. Having funeral cover in place for your family members can give you, and them, peace of mind

3. Funeral policies pay out much faster than life insurance policies. Old Mutual aims to pay valid claims within 48 hours (once all the necessary documents have been submitted)

Additional funeral cover benefits

These benefits are available at an additional cost and are plan dependent.

  • Double Accidental Death Cover - double the cover amount will be paid if an insured person dies due to an accident (legal limits and terms and conditions apply).
  • Paid-up benefit - premium payments stop but cover for the insured persons continue when you die, turn 65 or we recognise your disability.
  • Grocery benefit - 12 monthly payouts when you or your spouse/partner dies.
  • Education benefit - 12 monthly payouts when you or your spouse/partner dies.
  • Terminal Illness benefit - receive half of the amount of cover if an insured person is diagnosed with a terminal illness and has 12 months to live, with the balance paid when they die. This benefit is only available if the Plan has been active for more than 10 years.

Funeral cover in South Africa is an insurance policy where you pay a monthly premium, and it pays out a single amount when you or another insured person dies. The amount paid out can be used towards expenses like a coffin, tombstone, and catering. This ensures that when the time comes to say goodbye, your family will have some money towards funeral costs and may not need to go into debt.

When it comes to life and funeral insurance, one isn’t better than the other because both serve different needs when the insured person passes away. A funeral plan pays towards the expenses of a specific event: a funeral. This usually happens within 48 hours of Old Mutual receiving a valid claim. Life insurance provides for a family financially for the long term when they lose a breadwinner, and takes longer to pay out. It’s important to consider both as an integral part of your financial planning, and it’s possible to have both types of cover.

Yes, you can take out a funeral policy for your parents or other extended family members (like in-laws, grandparents, aunts and uncles) if they are younger than the maximum age specified in the funeral policy at application.

There are four main advantages of having funeral cover:

    1. Avoid leaving your family desperate during a difficult time.
    2. Avoid prolonging the process and give yourself peace of mind.
    3. Avoid having your family go into debt when paying funeral expenses.
    4. Have the convenience of cover that pays out quickly for those immediate funeral expenses.

When you apply for a funeral plan, you and the family members you choose to cover must be younger than a certain age. The specific age depends on which funeral policy you buy.

You can have more than one funeral policy, but it might not make sense financially to pay monthly premiums for two or more plans. Speak to a financial adviser to get advice on which funeral plan will be the most affordable for you, whilst covering the number of people you need it to.

Old Mutual funeral cover prices depend on the funeral plan you choose, how many family members you add, the ages of the people you want to provide cover for, the amount of cover needed, and any extra benefits added to the plan. Different plans have different rules around cover and premium increases. It is possible for your plan to have annual premium increases where the cover is adjusted upwards to reflect the higher premium, or where the increased premium does not result in higher cover. For more information on premium cover increases, take a look at the following terms and conditions per product or chat to an Old Mutual adviser.

You can miss up to six premiums without the plan being cancelled. You can miss these premiums by taking either or both an automatic premium holiday and a requested premium holiday in any combination as long as in total you do not miss more than six.

    Automatic premium holiday

If you miss a premium, to ensure that your plan is not cancelled and if you have not used up your premium holidays, we will give you an automatic premium holiday. You qualify for an automatic premium holiday after we have received your first premium. For the first six years of your plan, you can miss one premium per year this way. After the sixth year, you will not receive any additional automatic premium holidays but you do not lose the ones you have not taken. If you did not want to use your automatic premium holiday and want to make up the missed premium, you must contact us to make arrangements to pay it.

    Requested premium holiday

You qualify for the requested premium holiday once we have received at least six premiums from you. You must contact us to arrange your requested premium holiday at least one month before you want to miss the first premium.

No. A benefit amount equal to the premiums that we have already received for the portion of cover that we will not pay (because of a waiting period) will be payable if the covered life:

    • dies due to non-accidental (natural) causes, or
    • dies due to suicide,
    • within six months from the application date or date on which the person was added as an insured person under the plan.

For example, your total premium is R167 for yourself, spouse and children. You submit a claim for your spouse. The amount that will be paid out will be related to the premium for your spouse and not the full premium amount.
