Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon: From takkies to school shoes

2 Oct 2014
Today 166 pairs of school shoes were donated to learners at the Seotloana Primary School in Tembisa. The handover was made possible by the funds that the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon’s ‘More than Yourself’ campaign raised for the Put Foot Foundation.

The More Than Yourself campaign was launched in 2011 to raise funds for various charities and organisations raised through Old Mutual’s endurance sports sponsorships. About R450 000 has been raised in total, with R22 410 of that raised by two of its keenest ambassadors: blogger Jason von Berg and Kaya FM’s sports reader Mosibodi Whitehead.

Says Mosibodi: “It was an honour running the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon knowing that I was taking part for more than myself. Doing it for a good cause makes it all the more special. It is humbling to know that taking part in the most beautiful race in the world will ensure that children at Seotloana Primary do not have to go to school barefoot.”

Nelson Makanda, Old Mutual’s Provincial General Manager: Gauteng North & South, adds: “It is collaborative efforts like these that help to improve the lives of other South Africans. We are very proud to support Put Foot and help to make it possible for learners to walk tall, take their education seriously and keep taking steps towards a brighter future.”

The principal of Seotloana Primary School, Hilary Tabudi Ramokgopa, is thrilled by the contribution and explains: “Our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds, so we are grateful to Old Mutual, Put Foot and the More than Yourself ambassadors for their support and encouragement.”

Old Mutual selected the Put Foot Foundation as the beneficiary of its More than Yourself Campaign. The Put Foot Foundation is a volunteer-based, proudly South African, Public Beneficiary Organisation (PBO) and Not-for-Profit Organisation (NPO) set up to tackle the daily plight and indignity experienced by children with no shoes.
