Getaways that count

Read Time: 2 min

Next time you need a break – whether it's a mini weekend trip or something more substantial – opt for accommodation or activities that offer you a way to give back. Here are our suggestions.

Get lost

The coast in summer, with lazy days at the beach, is a very attractive option – which is why it's so popular. If you feel you need to escape to solitude then head for the expansive Namib desert instead. Greenfire Desert Lodge lies 150 kilometres from Sossusvlei in a 20 000 ha wilderness reserve, offering all the peace, quiet and privacy you could want.

The lodge is built out of Namib stone that, together with the on-site pool, helps guests to stay cool in summer.

Everyone would get a break, have time to think instead of dashing from one deadline to the next and return better, fresher, stronger.

Renew you

For a complete reboot, opt for a two-, four- or six-day retreat at Brookdale Health Hydro in the beautiful KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. The packages are all inclusive – and we mean all inclusive, from luxury rooms to all meals, snacks, talks, walks, Pilates, yoga and even make-up sessions.

Take a complete break

Are you considering a proper sabbatical? Taking a year off can make all the difference. Simon Cohen went one better in 2013 and put his entire London-based advertising agency on a year-long sabbatical. His thinking was that everyone would get a break, have time to think instead of dashing from one deadline to the next and return better, fresher, stronger  – and they all did.

While this may not be possible for everyone, his decision, and how they made it happen, proves that changing the way you work is never impossible.

Do something different

See another country and experience a different way of life with a volunteering holiday. SAVE Foundation makes it possible to spend time at a range of projects that, for instance, work with lions, care for orphaned or injured animals or teach children computer literacy, a sport or to surf.
