40 years of driving excellence: SA journalists took the wheel at COTY track days

For 40 years, the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists (SAGMJ) has been setting the standard for automotive excellence, and this year’s South African Car of the Year (COTY) track days did not disappoint, it delivered the same hands-on excitement. As headline sponsors, Old Mutual Insure is proud to support a competition that continues to provide independent, expert evaluation of the nation’s newest vehicles while driving innovation, safety, and quality standards across the industry.

On the 4th and 5th of March 2026, the 18 finalists for the 2026 COTY competition were put through their paces at Zwartkops Raceway in Tshwane. Journalists test drove the vehicles under real-world road conditions, on the racetrack and where applicable, on off-road courses, giving them an authentic view of each car’s performance, design, technology and value for money.

Presodhini Naicker, Executive of Marketing and Communication at Old Mutual Insure, emphasises the importance of the track days for both the industry and South African motorists.

“Being part of the 40th anniversary of SA COTY is a privilege. These track days are more than just a test drive, they’re a real, independent assessment of vehicles that helps consumers make informed decisions in a crowded market”.

Naicker adds that the competition aligns closely with Old Mutual Insure’s mission of empowering the consumers to make informed decisions about protecting their assets.

“For us, this is more than just a sponsorship. It’s an opportunity to be part of a platform that educates consumers, raises awareness around vehicle safety, quality and innovation, and helps people make informed decisions when investing in such an important asset as a car.”

Selected from over 55 new and qualifying vehicles launched in 2025, the finalists ranged from compact hatchbacks to family-oriented SUVs, performance machines and luxury offerings. One-third of this year’s finalists were Chinese brands, highlighting their growing influence in South Africa’s automotive landscape.

“The diversity of vehicles this year was absolutely remarkable. It’s exciting to see innovation across all segments, from new-energy vehicles to premium performance models. Our partnership with COTY allows us to celebrate this evolution while giving South Africans a trusted guide to help them navigate their next vehicle purchase,” Naicker says.

The hands-on testing phase is what sets the SA Car of the Year apart from many international competitions. Unlike awards that rely solely on specifications and lab testing, COTY jurors experience each vehicle in conditions representative of South African roads. This approach ensures that performance, comfort, safety, and everyday usability are all rigorously evaluated.

Following the three-day testing period, the jurors’ scores will be combined with segmental sales data and public votes through the Motor Enthusiast’s Choice, giving the public a say in recognising South Africa’s top vehicles.

“For four decades, COTY has been a credible, independent voice for South African motorists. Old Mutual Insure is proud to support this tradition, helping buyers make informed choices and promoting road safety, innovation, and quality across the industry,” Naicker concludes.

The winners of the 2026 SA Car of the Year will be revealed at a gala event in Johannesburg in May, capping off a month of automotive excitement that celebrates the best vehicles on South African roads.
