Exciting news for Port Elizabeth Provincial Hospital as Old Mutual unveiled a new children’s play area in the paediatric ward on Thursday, 7 August 2025. This heartwarming initiative, fully sponsored by Old Mutual, aims to bring joy and comfort to young patients during their stay.
The donation includes brand new furniture, décor, toys, books, and playtime essentials carefully selected to support the emotional wellbeing of children in care. The colourful and interactive space was officially presented by Old Mutual’s Retail Mass Market (RMM) Regional Manager for Eastern Cape, Thembela Makaula, and company delegates, alongside union representatives and hospital executives.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with PE Provincial Hospital to establish a nurturing environment for young patients," expressed Makaula. The initiative aims to offer not just a physical space but a sanctuary where children can embrace joy and play, setting aside their health challenges to simply enjoy being kids.
Old Mutual's team has been diligently working on renovating and transforming the children's area in collaboration with hospital staff. The project culminated in a special unveiling ceremony, marking the official handover of the completed facility.
This initiative highlights Old Mutual’s dedication to corporate social responsibility and enhancing healthcare experiences for children in need, emphasising the goal of creating a safe haven where children can enjoy moments of play and imagination.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Old Mutual for their remarkable generosity and forward-thinking vision. The new play area is set to positively impact the lives of young patients and their families, providing a space where children can simply be kids,” says the Deputy Nursing Manager, Bridget Plaatjies.
