Old Mutual Insure employee takes the crown in The Insurance Apprentice 202507 November 2025

Old Mutual Insure is proud to celebrate the success of one of its own, Khaya Mashologu, who has been named the winner of The Insurance Apprentice (TIA) 2025, a prestigious national competition that showcases and develops young talent in South Africa’s short-term insurance sector.

Mashologu, who is armed with a Bachelor of Commerce in Business Management, joined Old Mutual Insure in 2019 as a consultant. He has not only excelled in the competition but has also advanced in his career. Shortly after his victory, he was promoted to Sales & Services Team Leader, marking a new chapter in his professional career. He notes, however, that the promotion was already in progress by the time he entered the competition.

“It is a tremendous achievement for Khaya and a proud moment for Old Mutual Insure,” says Presodhini Naicker, Executive of Marketing and Communication at Old Mutual Insure.

She adds, “his success reflects the calibre of talent we have within our business and highlights the importance of platforms like The Insurance Apprentice in shaping the future of the industry. Mashologu’s story is a powerful reminder that when we invest in our people, we invest in the long-term sustainability and success of the sector as a whole”.

Now in its 11th year, The Insurance Apprentice, founded by insurance industry publication FA News, has become a critical cornerstone in nurturing and recognising the next generation of insurance leaders.

In the competition participants face practical challenges that mirror real-world industry scenarios, testing their knowledge, leadership, problem-solving, and innovation skills. The programme has consistently produced professionals who are well-equipped to make meaningful contributions to the sector.

Reflecting on his victory, Mashologu says, “the Insurance Apprentice has been a life-changing experience. It challenged me to think differently, work under huge pressure, and grow both personally and professionally. I am excited to use what I’ve learned to contribute more not only to Old Mutual Insure, but also to the sector by mentoring the next generation of insurance professionals”.

Mashologu hails from the small town of Bethlehem in the Eastern Free State, and his roots continue to inspire him to inspire others. "I entered to show small-town boys and girls that they also have a place in the big leagues. I entered to prove to myself that I have something to offer despite my upbringing, because most people from where I come from, who look like me, are not offered the opportunity of a seat at the table,” he adds.

His journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of sector initiatives like The Insurance Apprentice in transforming the industry by providing mentorship, hands-on experience and exposure. The programme opens doors for individuals who might not otherwise have such opportunities in the insurance sector.

“Transforming our industry means broadening opportunities for individuals, especially those who might not otherwise have had the chance to demonstrate their potential. Initiatives like The Insurance Apprentice are vital in driving this transformation and ensuring that the future of insurance is sustainable and inclusive,” Naicker adds.

As a young black professional thriving in a competitive sector, Mashologu’s story is sure to inspire others to pursue careers in insurance and demonstrates the opportunities available to those willing to step up and showcase their talents.

Naicker and Mashologu both encourage aspiring professionals to apply for the next season of The Insurance Apprentice and take their first step toward a rewarding career in the insurance industry.
