Are you safe on social media?

Social media is a great place to reconnect, share, and learn, but never forget – once you post something online, it is out there, forever. A good guideline for you is to think if you would be prepared to say what you propose on a public billboard.

Helpful privacy tips for social media engagement

  • Befriending strangers is not recommended. Remove unknown connections to avoid becoming a victim of cyber crime.
  • Be careful about sharing your location/check-ins while posting (hackers can use this information to find out live locations, preferred hangouts, home addresses and gyms.)
  • Avoid using certain passwords such as loved one’s or pets names, birthdays or reusing old passwords.
  • Be careful about clicking on links – they may have malicious intent.
  • Frequently review privacy settings on Social Media sites and enable them to best protect your information.
  • Unintentional disclosure – sharing too much on social media may include answers to security questions. Avoid publishing confidential or too much personal information. E.g. Posting about getting your covid vaccine with an image of your vaccination card, this contains too much personal information.
  • Be careful not to inadvertently post inappropriate, prohibited, false or criminal content.
  • Avoid posting about place your employees, competitors, suppliers or third parties in a negative light.
  • Avoid mentioning your company in a post – leave any company related comments to authorised spokespeople.
  • Setup MFA/2FA (Multifactor Authentication or 2 Factor Authentication) on Social Media sites to increase security.
  • Be careful not to use your work email address to create social media accounts.
  • Be vigilant of potential phishing scams.
  • Remember you are responsible for anything you retweet, share, or are tagged in.
